The “Engineering Design, Structural Assessment, and BOQ Preparation for Enhanced Sanitation Facilities in Three Model Schools in Jashore” was commissioned by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation with financial support from Dutch Government (DGIS) as a follow-up to the initial sanitation facilities assessment project. Recognizing the need for additional technical interventions to optimize outcomes, this assignment aimed to provide detailed engineering designs, structural assessments, and comprehensive cost estimations for targeted upgrades in three selected schools: Sheba Shongho Girls School, Shomilonny Boys School, and Municipality Preparatory Co-Education School.
The assignment’s primary objectives included:
- Conducting detailed engineering and structural designs for the construction and renovation of sanitation facilities.
- Assessing the condition of existing septic tanks and providing actionable recommendations for their renovation and desludging intervals.
- Preparing comprehensive BOQs using the latest LGED rate schedule for construction and renovation works.
- Ensuring foundational stability through soil testing (for Sheba Shongho Girls School).
- Delivering actionable recommendations for sustainable wastewater discharge solutions (e.g., soak wells or DWATS).
This initiative played a crucial role in refining and advancing sanitation infrastructure in the selected model schools, ensuring alignment with modern engineering standards, environmental sustainability, and community needs.
The following services were meticulously executed:
Project Planning and Coordination:
- Conducted inception meetings with SNV and school authorities to review the additional requirements and align project activities with stakeholder expectations.
- Developed a detailed work plan, including timelines for design, assessment, and reporting.
Soil Testing (Sheba Shongho Girls School):
- Conducted two borehole soil tests to determine foundational stability and suitability for a two-storied toilet construction.
- Analyzed soil conditions and incorporated findings into the engineering design.
Engineering Design and Drawing:
- Prepared detailed engineering and structural designs for: i) A two-storied toilet with a foundation at Sheba Shongho Girls School, and ii) Renovation of sanitation facilities at Shomilonny Boys School and Municipality Preparatory Co-Education School.
- Provided architectural drawings and structural schematics aligned with safety and functionality standards.
Septic Tank Assessment:
- Conducted a thorough evaluation of existing septic tanks in all three schools to determine their condition, capacity, and operational efficiency.
- Recommended renovation measures, desludging intervals, and appropriate wastewater discharge solutions such as vertical soak wells, horizontal soak wells, or Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DWATS).
BOQ Preparation:
- Developed detailed cost estimates and BOQs for construction and renovation activities, adhering to the latest LGED rate schedule.
- Included itemized costs for structural works, septic tank upgrades, and additional facility requirements.
Reporting and Deliverables:
Delivered a comprehensive package of outputs, including:
- Soil test report for Sheba Shongho Girls School.
- Detailed engineering and structural drawings for the construction and renovation of sanitation facilities in the three schools.
- Septic tank assessment reports with actionable recommendations for maintenance and wastewater discharge solutions.
