Water, sanitation and hygiene are at the very core of sustainable development, crucial for survival of people and the planet. Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of people around the world, which is projected to increase with the rise of global temperatures as a result of climate change. Although 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved water sanitation since 1990, declining supplies of safe drinking water is a major problem impacting every continent. About 20 million people of Bangladesh are currently exposed to contaminated water. In sanitation, while only 3% of the population defecates in the open, more than half of the latrines used in Bangladesh are unsanitary in design, operation or maintenance. In respect to hygiene, while general awareness has raised the unhygienic practices persists. Only 30% people wash their hands with soap or ash and water after defecation. In Bangladesh, economic loss due to inadequate sanitation is 84% of the total economic impacts or equivalent to 5.3% of GDP.

SDG goal 6 states, “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. The Government has prepared a number of policies, for example: National Hygiene Promotion Strategy for Water Supply and Sanitation Sector in Bangladesh 2012, National Sanitation Strategy 2005, and National Policy for Safe Water Supply & Sanitation 1998, National Strategy for Water and Sanitation Hard to Reach Areas of Bangladesh 2011. By bearing these policies in mind, Disaster Management Watch works with businesses, governments, and civil society to ensure a water-secure healthy future.
