We are thrilled to announce that DM WATCH LIMITED, jointly with the Institute of Professional Training & Management (IPTM), is undertaking an assignment on “Fresh Market Training on Food Safety, Food Loss and Waste Reduction, Food Handling, Waste Management, and Waste Segregation”, of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The duration of the assignment is from July 2022 to June 2023.

The assignment will help enhance the food system and make it more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable by developing the capacity of the fresh market actors in four City Corporations- Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation, Narayanganj City Corporation, and Gazipur City Corporation; influencing fresh market policies through evidence-based advocacy and producing a project showcase for national-level adoption advocacy.

This assignment will take place in 130 fresh markets in the four cities, where at first, Neighborhood-level Food Safety Committees will be established to monitor food safety and market conditions. Developing the capacity of different fresh market actors through training and piloting source segregation is one of the major activities of the assignment. Prior to the capacity-building activities, a baseline study will be conducted to assess the existing knowledge and practices of vendors, market committees/associations, cleaners, and waste collectors regarding waste segregation, management, Food hygiene, personal hygiene, safe food handling, and market maintenance and Governance. After completion of the capacity-building activities, an end-line study will be conducted to capture the changes or impacts of the capacity development initiatives. Based on the study findings, a detailed strategic plan for implementing waste segregation initiatives in fresh markets will be developed and disseminated through city and national-level seminars.
