Project Description:

A baseline survey was conducted from October, 2018 to February, 2019 in Dhaka, Savar and Chattogram. The main objective of this study was to generate a set of baseline values as benchmarks for monitoring and evaluation of the project. It also aimed to provide an understanding of the underlying situation of urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) to support in reducing risk and vulnerability in the project areas.  Multi-stage Stratified Sampling and Purposive Sampling methods were used in order to collect data for this study. 1420 representative samples were selected from four different strata e.g. women, children, school children and community people (parents and caregivers) out of the project beneficiaries. Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews were also conducted for gathering qualitative information. Apart from primary data collection, this study also reviewed relevant policies. Findings revealed that the dwellers of the surveyed urban areas were suffering from various hazards and social problems. According to majority of the respondents (87%) waterlogging was a major problem in all three studied areas. Furthermore, none of the studied City Corporation or Municipality had multi-hazard risk reduction plan. The findings of this study also suggest that Mass people, as well as policymakers, were reluctant towards the necessity of child-sensitive urban resilience. Though a good number of policies are already in place but practitioners are not fully aware about these policies. Thus, this study suggests that in order to introduce people with these policies and concepts, specific guidelines and training manuals should be prepared.
